Texas Level 3 Security Officer
In-Person Skills/Firearms Qualification 10-Hour Class

Starting from January 1, 2024, H.B. 3424 mandates that the handgun proficiency and self-defense course must include at least 10 hours and not more than 15 hours of in-person instruction with an on-site instructor approved by the department (see our certification below). 

Apart from the online training module, students must fulfill their firearms qualification and defensive tactics training by personally engaging with an instructor. 

Before registering, please make sure  you understand the following:

  • This is the 10-hour hands on defensive tactic and firearms training with live fire qualification for Level 3 Security Officers in Texas.

  • Students must be proficient in the firearms they will be qualifying in, as Instructors can not assist the student during the proficiency test.

  • Students cannot rent a handgun for this course, no exceptions!
  • You must have completed the required classroom training for Level 3 Officers prior to this in person class. If you have not you can take the online course by clicking here.

  • The proficiency qualification is for pistol only due to range rules. Our shotgun qualification is done at a different range on another day. Your instructor will provide information about shotgun qualifications during the class.

This course meets H.B. 3424 that requires 10 hours of in person classroom instruction on handgun proficiency and self-defense tactics.

Course location, start time, and lunch:

  • Class starts promptly at 8a, Door locks at 8a!
  • 407 Gun Club is normally closed at 8am. The instructor will be in the parking lot 30 minutes before the start time to greet everyone.
  • Lunch will not be provided. You will be given time to get your lunch at a nearby restaurant. You may bring food in a cooler. There is a microwave available to warm up food. There is no vending machines or snacks provided.
  • You must have completed the required Online classroom training for Level 3 Officers prior to this session. If you have not you can take the online course by clicking here.

What to bring to the course.

  • Footwear that covers the entire foot (mandatory)
  • Pants suitable for training with belt. Please wear a shirt with a conservative neckline (suggested, to protect against hot brass)
  • Handgun (You cannot rent a handgun for this course, no exceptions)
    • Should be in clean and safe working order.
    • Minimum caliber for Level 3 Security License Qualification is 9mm.
    • At least TWO empty magazines required for semi-autos
    • Red Dot Optics are allowed.
  • Steel ammo of any kind is not allowed.
  • 50 rounds of ammunition, Minimum caliber for Level 3 Security License Qualification is 9mm. All ammo must be brass-cased, factory ammo, no reloads, no steel.
  • Hearing Protection (plugs or muffs)
  • Eye protection

Personal firearms must be unloaded in a case, or bag at all times except when on the firing line and under the direction of the instructor. Carrying a firearm on your person is not allowed.

All individuals qualifying with a firearm to satisfy the requirements shall qualify with an actual demonstration by the individual of the ability to safely and proficiently use the category of firearm for which the individual seeks qualification.

  • The categories of handguns are:
    • SA–Semi-automatic; and
    • NSA–Non semi-automatic.
  • The SA qualification authorizes the carrying of either semi-automatic or non semi-automatic handguns.

Prerequisites: You must be proficient with your firearm to be able to pass the shooting test. Any unsafe use of a firearm will result in immediate dismissal from the course.

DEMONSTRATION COURSE OF FIRE:

To successfully qualify, shooters must complete the course with a minimum score of 70% (175 out of possible 250). If any malfunctions are encountered, the shooter will work through the problem and finish the course of fire. If rounds are held (not fired within the allotted time), the shots will be scored as misses. All courses of fire will be scored on a standard B-27 target. The B-27 target will be provided by the instructor.
